AFRO-PUNK - We had so much fun y’all. My phone died pretty early on and it was good cause I didn’t capture performances, watched them. We sang and danced. It was nice to be with friends I have known for decades and be with our teenagers! It was dope to be singing along to the music that we like and our kids like too- thank God. I had a chance to see artists I rarely get to see like Daniel Cesar and HER on separate stages. It was nice to be part of Day 1. I know day 2 is crazy! Mama Glow Gathering - LET’S TALK ABOUT LOSS: A HEALING CIRCLE FOR WOMEN at @mamaglow _ In honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day in October, we are pleased to welcome @ihadamiscarriage Jessica Zucker, Los Angeles-based psychologist and writer specializing in women's reproductive and maternal mental health, who will guide us in a healing circle to sit in safety and reflection and sisterhood. Welcoming women who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, or infant loss- this circle will provide a safe space for women to talk about pregnancy and infant loss and life after. We will discuss experiences that frequently follow loss, such as: grief, anxiety, shame, guilt, self-blame, hope, and more. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, so this circle can also provide space and time to honor and remember pregnancies and babies lost. _ Dr. Zucker specialized in this field long before experiencing a 2nd trimester loss firsthand. In 2014, she launched the #IHadAMiscarriage campaign with her first New York Times piece with the aim of shifting the antiquated silence and stigma that shrouds this topic. Her writing has appeared in: The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, BuzzFeed, TIME, VICE, New York Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Refinery29, among others. Mama Glow- SACRED ANATOMY Let’s take a moment to speak about the use of words and the body. The word yoni describes the downward-pointing triangle that symbolizes the womb. It speaks to the sacredness of this part of our body. Each letter of the word in Sanskrit has an esoteric meaning defining the innermost content of the word itself (while the word is pronounced yo-nee, the Sanskrit word is written as yoin): _ Y: The animating principle, the heart, the true self, union _ O: Preservation, brightness _ I: Love, desire, consciousness, to shine, to pervade pain & sorrow _ N: Lotus, motherhood, menstrual cycle, nakedness, emptiness, pearl _ The female sacred anatomy is a multifunctional & integrated system designed to experience pleasure, make babies, & experience attachment. The words we use have powerful meaning. The word vagina comes from Latin, meaning “sheath,” to a sword. In other words, a container for a man’s “sword,” or penis, for a man’s pleasure- rather than our own. _ Many women lack connection with their body parts, referring to their most intimate parts as “down there.” We expect our sexual partners to know exactly how to navigate our intimate topography, & yet oftentimes we don’t have a sense of what pleasures us without them. You must learn how to turn yourself on first, before you ever turn that responsibility over to a partner. Our partners are here to enhance our pleasure- but we should already know how to turn our own selves “on”. Our pleasure is our responsibility. _ How can you trust your body with birth when you’re not relating to your own sacred anatomy? This disconnected behavior reflects a warped cultural view of the sacred female body. We’ve had a lot of negative conditioning about our body parts- a long history of misogyny. But we are here to invoke the divine within our bodies. We have to remember that we are holy. Nothing is more sacred than the creative process. There is no force more powerful than the female orgasm. Glow Time is the self-care movement I have been practicing, grounding my work in, writing about on instagram, in articles and in my bestselling books, and advocating for, for over a decade. _ A spiritual practice provides us with fortitude and gratitude for whatever comes our way. Mama Glow- DOULA IMMERSION LEVEL 1 AUG 2018. Look at this beautiful group of women!!! I feel honored that this summer I got to witness 3 cohorts of doula trainees come through the space and grow. I really can’t wait for all of the doula groups to meet! _ This was a soulful weekend, supercharged and deeply spiritual. There were a lot of tears, powerful ancestral healing, remembrance, and affirmation. The next wave of birth workers is becoming... yes to the future! I’m so proud of everyone for answering the call.
